Weekly Announcements Call Script- Feb 20-24

Good Evening Heaton Families.

This is Jayme Cardinal-Principal at Heaton.  I am calling with announcements for the week February 20th through February 24th.

  1. Our overall average for attendance for this past week was 90.1%   Our 6th grade averaged 89.6% for the week, 7th grade was at 92.7%, while the 8th grade was at 88.09%.  The numbers for 8th grade are concerning.  Again, the connection between attendance, grades and eventually graduation from High School are all linked.  Please ensure your child is at school daily.   If you need support, please contact us.

  2. There is also No School Monday, February 20 due to the President’s Day Holiday and there is no school on Tuesday, February 21 due to our Parent Teacher Conference.   PTCs are from 10-30 to 6PM.    Teachers will break from 2-2:30 for lunch.    These will be the final conferences for the school year.  During conferences, we will be providing our 8th grade families with information about High School.  Please plan on attending.  Thank you.

  3. As a reminder, our student council is sponsoring Pennies for Patients.   The money raised will go the Lymphoma/Leukemia Foundation.  Pennies will be collected in ASAP classes and the winning class will have a lunch provided by Olive Garden.   The collection will be from Monday, February 13 through February 24th.  Our goal was $600 which we are nearly at!  Thanks to everyone for your support in our work around Random Acts of Kindness.

Beginning March 1st, we will begin serving breakfast during 1st hour.   We have noticed that a significant number of students are not eating and also based on behavior data, we see spikes in behavior around the lunch time hour.   While students are not required to eat breakfast, we feel that offering breakfast in a smaller setting will help students feel more comfortable to eat.  Please let us know if you have any questions.

  5. On Thursday, select 8th students will be taking the NAEP assessment.  Letters went home to student who were randomly selected by NAEP.   Please call if you have any questions.  This only affects about 80 of our 8th grade students.

  3. As I mentioned in last week’s call, missing work has been a concern.    As an AVID school, our focus of being college and career ready sets the expectation of completing work in a timely manner and turning it in for credit.   As a reminder, this quarter, we will not be accepting work two weeks beyond the due date unless other arrangements are made between parents/students and the teacher.  The amount of credit for the late work will be determined by each teacher as it has been in the past.   Please contact us if you are needing additional help or support to help your child succeed.

Weekly Announcement Script January 23-27

posted Jan 22, 2017, 2:51 PM by Robert Odell

Good Evening Heaton Families.

This is Jayme Cardinal-Principal at Heaton.  I am calling with announcements for the week January 23rd through January 27th.

  1. There is no school on Monday, January, January 23rd due to a teacher work day.   The quarter ended this past Friday.  Report cards will go home on Tuesday.   Please ask you child to see their report cards.

  2. The 3rd week of January was much better for attendance!!   Our overall average for the week as a school was 92%   Our 6th grade averaged 92.2% for the week, 7th grade was at 93.3%, while the 8th grade continued to hover at 89%.     This was the best week in quite some time.   Keep it up HAWKS!  Parents thank you for ensuring your child is at school every day.

  3. The 2nd quarter and 1st semester ended.  This year we have worked to support student regarding their course work.   We have tutoring every day, specified tutoring groups, and my message to staff has been to focus on quality not quantity when teaching lessons.  We have also notified parents all along regarding students’ grades and missing work.  The majority of our teachers are here before and after school to work with students as well.   The area of missing work has become a huge concern.  Last week we had 417 students who had missing assignments.   That is 60% of our student body.  We recognize that there are some cases that have special circumstances, but overall students don’t seem to feel the importance of their grades and work.   As an AVID school, our focus of being college and career ready sets the expectation of completing work in a timely manner and turning it in for credit.   This quarter, we will not be accepting work two weeks beyond the due date unless other arrangements are made between parents/students and the teacher.  The amount of credit for the late work will be determined by each teacher as it has been in the past.   Please contact us if you are needing additional help or support to help your child succeed.

  4. We are seeing students come to school without the need and required materials to help them be successful in their classes.   I wanted to remind parents that students need to continue to have materials for their classes.   Be sure that your child speaks their teachers about any new materials they need such as new spiral notebooks, tape, scissors, pencils, or sticky notes.   These items are used daily and required for students to have.

  5. Please check out the Heaton Calendar on the either the Heaton Web page or from the Heaton App.   We have quite of few dates that are important coming up including parent teacher conferences, the High School 8th grade parent night, sports dates, and days off from school.  The App is also a very easy way to call or email teachers if you have questions about your child’s grades or missing work.

  6. Good luck to our Wrestling, Girls BBall teams, and NALs team this week!    Girls Bball begins their season this week.

  7. If you have any questions about any of these announcements, please feel free to contact the school.

Thank you

Weekly Announcements January 16- 20

posted Jan 17, 2017, 7:42 AM by Robert Odell

Good Evening Heaton Families.

This is Jayme Cardinal-Principal at Heaton.  I am calling with announcements for the week January 16th through January 20th   .

  1. There is no school on Monday, January 16th due to the MLK Holiday.

  2. The 2nd week of January proved to be interesting for attendance.   We have quite a few students who have been sick.   Our 6th grade averaged 86% for the week, 7th grade was at 91%, and 8th grade continued to hover at 89%.

  3. Please stop by to get your Infinite Campus portal account information so that you can have information about your child’s grades, attendance, etc.  The information is live, up to date.    To get access, Infinite Campus requires parents are given a “unique” user name and password to access the account.   Ms. Janet in our school office can help parents get this information so you can have access.   We are moving towards sending information via your individual parent Infinite Campus account.  Please stop by the school to get the password and instructions.  School Choice will be handled this year through the parent portal.   This is critical especially for our 8th grade students if you are thinking of attending a high school not in your attendance area.    For example if you live in Centennial’s area, but want your child to attend East you will need to fill out the choice application on line through your parent portal account.

  4. The 2nd quarter and 1st semester ends this Friday.   We sent home students with their missing work lists on Friday to work on over the long three day weekend.   We will send report cards home next Tuesday.   As reminder, there is no school next Monday either as it is a teacher work day.

  5. Friday our PTO is sponsoring a Winter Dance.  The dance is after school from 2:15 to 3:45.     Tickets go on sale this week for $5.  We only sell 300 tickets, so get yours early!

  6. Please check out the Heaton Calendar on the either the Heaton Web page or from the Heaton App.   We have quite of few dates that are important coming up including parent teacher conferences, the High School 8th grade parent night, sports dates, and days off from school.

  7. Good luck to our Wrestling team this week as they take on the county schools on Thursday at County High School at 4:30PM.

  8. If you have any questions about any of these announcements, please feel free to contact the school.

Thank you
