Principal’s Message

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The third quarter began on January 26, 2016.  As we begin a new quarter and semester, we wanted to share with parents and students some reminders about our expectation for the students at Heaton.

This year, all students are enrolled in a first hour class called AVID Success Advisory Period.  This class focuses on the AVID instructional practices in Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading (WICOR).  We have and will continue using these instructional strategies and practices.

Each week in the ASAP class students are expected to complete the following for a grade:

  1. Grade Point Average Sheet (GPA):   This sheet is filled out at the beginning of each week and students are required to obtain a parent signature.  The sheet is due on Friday WITH a parent signature.

  2. Attendance:  All students are given attendance points for this class in accordance with encouraging students to attend school. (Colorado Compulsory Attendance Laws)

  3. Dress Code:  All students are given dress code points each day if dress in the proper attire.

  4. Binder Check:  All students are required to carry a binder with all their notebooks/materials.  The binder is checked every Monday.

  5. Planner Check:  All students are required to fill out their planners each day for each class.  The planner is checked on Friday and students are given a grade based on the quality of their organization.

Additionally, the ASAP class provides students an opportunity to focus on their skills to help them in their classes.  These skills include using Cornell Notes, doing CLOSE Reads, studying and practicing Soft Skills as part of the Career and Technical Education initiative, and working in teams to solve problems.

This class sets the stage not only for their day, but also for their future.  As a staff, we are asking that parents help with the following:

  1. Asking to see and sign the GPA Sheet.

  2. Ensure students are in attendance each day

  3. Come to school dressed in the proper uniform

  4. Help students organize their binder, notebooks, etc.

We always appreciate the support of parents to ensure we can fully help students gain their fullest potential.  Please let us know if you have any questions about this class.
